I am presenting at the 2017 APS Division of Fluid Dynamics conference in Denver, CO. My research talk titled Fine Structure Symmetry-Breaking in Decaying Passive Scalars Advected by Laminar Shear Flow is part of the General Fluid Dynamics II session and is scheduled for Tuesday, November 21st at 9:31am in room 708. [Program ListingAbstract (M22.00008).]  I will also be part of Poster Session I with a technical poster on education and outreach scheduled for Monday, November 20th at 3:20pm in concourse E. awm public lecture on the mathematics of voting and gerrymandering

The AWM Chapter at UNC Chapel Hill is hosting a public lecture by Dr. Moon Duchin on Monday, November 6th at 6:30pm. The talk titled Political Geometry: How and Why Shapes Matter for Voting District is sponsored by the UNC Undergraduate Student Congress and the UNC Mathematics Department. Together with fellow graduate student Katrina Morgan and AWM faculty advisor Dr. Katie Newhall, we secured funding and organized the event.

AMS graduate student travel award

I have been selected from the American Mathematical Society to receive their Graduate Student Travel Award. I will use the award to present my work at the 2018 Joint Mathematics Meeting scheduled for January 10th-13th, 2018 in San Diego, CA. At the conference, I will be giving several presentations. I will be talking about my research in the AMS Contributed Paper Session on Applied Mathematics || [see abstract, see program]. I will also be presenting in the MAA General Contributed Paper Session on Mentoring [see abstract, see program.] Additionally, I will be giving a poster presentation with Katrina Morgan in the MAA Poster Session on Mathematical Outreach Programs. Finally, I am one of the organizers of the MAA Session on Attracting, Involving, and Retaining Women and Underrepresented Groups in Mathematics --Righting the Balance [see program].

 

FGSA Travel Award for Excellence in Graduate Research

I have been selected from the American Physical Society (APS) Forum on Graduate Student Affairs (FGSA) to receive the Travel Award for Excellence in Graduate Research.
I will use the award to attend the 2017 APS Division of Fluid Dynamics conference scheduled for November 19th-21st in Denver, CO.  At the conference, I will be both presenting my research in the General Fluid Dynamics II session [see abstract] and give a poster presentation about Girls Talk Math in the outreach session [see abstract].

I have been invited by Dr. Dan Harris to give a talk as part of the Fluids at Brown, Division of Applied Mathematics Fluids and Thermal Sciences, School of Engineering Joint Seminar Series. My presentation titled Symmetry-breaking in passive scalars advected by laminar shear flow is scheduled for Tuesday, October 17th at 3pm in Barus & Holley, Room 190.

I have been invited to give a research talk to undergraduate students interested in Mathematics as part of the Department of Mathematics events for UNC University Research Week.  My talk titled Fluid Dynamics Research in the UNC Mathematics Department: A Very Short Introduction will be in Phillips Hall (room 367) on Monday, October 9th at 4pm.
 

NSf includes watch us grant award

Together with Katrina Morgan (fellow PhD candidate at UNC), and with Dr. Katie Newhall as Faculty Advisor, I have been awarded funds through the WATCH US grant from the NSF INCLUDES program. The funding will be used to organize the first "Association for Women in Mathematics Triangle Conference" tailored to undergraduate and graduate students.

girls talk math fall event -- chapel hill, nc

Katrina Morgan and I will host our first Fall Event for the Girls Talk Math campers on September 23rd, 2017. The Fall event will be hosted at the House Undergraduate Library on UNC campus with the help from UNC librarians Emily Jack and Therese Triumph. We will ran a Women in Mathematics Wikipedia Edit-a-thon with the goal of increasing and bettering the representation of female Mathematicians’ pages on Wikipedia. In the afternoon, campers will follow Taylor Livingston on a themed campus tour titled Digging in Our Heels, Angels on Campus: The Herstory of Women at Carolina

I am attending the SAMSI Industrial Math/Stat Modeling Workshop for Graduate Students (IMSM) that will be held July 16th-26th on the North Carolina State University campus. I will be part of the US Naval Research Lab group with project title Stochastic Parameterizations in Numerical Weather Prediction.

girls talk math 2017 -- unc, chapel hill

I will be running the second edition of the summer camp Girls Talk Math in the Department of Mathematics at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. In collaboration with Katrina Morgan (PhD Candidate in Mathematics at UNC), I have founded the camp in 2016, and organized and run the program for the past two years.

j. burton linker award for undergraduate teaching

I received the 2017 J. Burton Linker Award for Undergraduate Teaching. This award given yearly by the Mathematics Department of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill to the graduate student who has shown the greatest effectiveness as a teacher of undergraduate mathematics courses.

UNC DISSERTATION COMPLETION FELLOWSHIP

I received the Dissertation Completion Fellowship for the academic year 2017/2018. This award supports doctoral students in the final year of their dissertation enabling them to focus full time on research and writing. It is a competitive internal fellowship awarded by the UNC Graduate School.
